"Reality is often disappointing". In this list, we will be going over 10 movies that didn't live up to my expectation in 2019.

10) Pháp Sư Mù (Blind Shaman)
Starting off the list is a mild disappointment. Everyone and their moms know who Huynh Lap is and his works create real impact on the marketing and memes industry alike. However, Pháp Sư Mù were infested with typical Vietnamese movie flaws: sloppy editing, flat jokes, terrible villain and very very bad fight choreography. The side stories are actually the one dragging the movie down the most, especially the weird sub-plot with the random lullaby grandma.

9) Men in Black International
Being a fan of Men in Black franchise and Chris Hemsworth, I am thoroughly disappointed with the movies. The actions are vanilla and the adventure is also basic. No witty Will Smith and no really out-of-this-world aliens turn the franchise into just another forgettable movie, this time with a woman agent.

8) X-men Dark Phoenix
Insanity is doing the same thing over again expecting different results. X-men Dark Phoenix avoided some of the Last Stand mistake but also made way more back. The fact that Marvel was able to make a better Dark Phoenix saga on a 90s TV cartoon series compare to a $200 million budget 2019 movie is just sad. Dark Phoenix being the last Fox X-men is also adding insult on injury for the long time X-men fans.

7) Terminator Dark Fate
Everything came after Terminator 1 & 2 are all garbage. I would have gone into the theater expecting nothing if it wasn't for the return of James Cameron. If the creator of this franchise can't bring it back, then who can? Instead of the glorious revival of a down-falling franchise, we get a disappointing soft reboot. Sarah Connor, John Connor and T-800 (all caucasian) were replaced by a Mexican woman, another woman and a Mexican robot respectively, making it the most culturally appropriate reboot in 2019.

6) Frozen 2
Frozen 2 is the most unnecessary sequel in this top 10 list. Frozen 1 was a solid sisterly story with high stake and tension while Frozen 2 is just a weird unfulfilling adventure. What's the point of Elsa resisting going Into the Unknown if the Unknown just gonna literally push her out of the kingdom? Why don't the giant breaks the god damn wall themselves? In what Earth does Ice, a by-product of water, be the binding element instead of water? And raise your hand if you actually know someone who cried at that Olaf sacrifice scene.

5) Mắt biếc (Deep eyes???)
The most hyped Vietnamese movie of all time is the appropriate description for Mắt Biếc. It was heavily talked about from the casting period all the way till now. Mắt Biếc was written by the beloved Nguyễn Nhật Ánh and directed by the equally respected Victor Vũ. As a movie, however, the cuck story of Ngạn is fundamentally broken beyond repair. A passive protagonist makes for a boring watch no matter how talented the film maker is. Book is a more appropriate media for delivering these kind of mellow sad content, and Mắt Biếc should have stayed in the book.

4) Trạng Quỳnh
Watching a Vietnamese Tet movie is like gambling, the odd of you losing is always higher. Looking at the cast, the director, the poster and the trailer, one could already say a lot about the movie: it was made by lazy producer who think a few big names can make a great movie. I went into it with a low expectation and yet the movie still assault my senses. The jokes were terrible. The acting was half-assed. The story made no sense. The main villain was weak. The main heroes are unlikable. The cliches are everywhere... The fact that Đức Thịnh still getting jobs in the movie industry is the most astonishing factor in this whole ordeal.

3) Glass
M. Night Shyamalan finally got back to his feets with Split after a series of bad movies. I don't like Unbreakable but the thought of it belongs in the same universe as one of the best movie of 2016 really peaks my interest. 19 years of build-up for an epic, philosophical super hero triology ended with a disappointing Glass. Dane getting drowned in a random puddle by a no name soldier at the end of the movie truly describe the anti-climaticness of the movie.

2) Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
Zac Efron portrayed an infamous serial killer Ted Bundy whose main weapon is his impeccable charm? Yes please! Sadly, the excitement ends there. The route that the film maker chose to go was boring. Instead of a hauntingly killer thriller, we get a "did he do it or not" sad drama with great focus on Lily's psychology. The movie itself was ok but the trailer has a different tones and moods which in turn makes me feel a bit underwhelming at the end.

1) Captain Marvel
Toping of the list we have the first female-led Marvel superhero origin movie. I hate everything about this movie on and off screen. Carol is one of the most hated character in recent comic and she kept that trait in the movie. Brie Larson is an egomaniac feminist off camera. The final battle is a snooze fest with terrible wire works followed by an anti-climatic boss battle. But, the thing that truly disappoints me is how they ruined Nick Fury's back story and the Avengers name's origin (both of which are crucial to the MCU world building) to boost a lame super heroine like Captain Marvel.

What movie disappointed you the most in 2019?
